Tamil Unicode to HTML Entity
தமிழ் எழுத்துக் குறியீடுகள்
Encode or decode Tamil. Inspect characters and UTF-8 bytes.
Character Breakdown
One row per Unicode code point. Showing the first 200. A vowel sign or pulli is a separate code point.
| Character | Code Point | Unicode Name | UTF-8 |

க→க
Pick the Format for Your Destination
Start with Text to Codes and paste Tamil or mixed text. Every output has its own Copy button. All characters are encoded in the entity, CSS and JavaScript outputs, including spaces and punctuation. The URL output follows component encoding, so some safe ASCII characters remain visible. Open Character Breakdown to inspect the first 200 code points; the total count still includes the whole input.
| Destination | Format for க |
|---|---|
| HTML text | க or க |
| JavaScript / JSON string | \u0B95 |
| CSS string | \0B95 |
| URL component | %E0%AE%95 |
| Unicode reference | U+0B95 |
| UTF-8 bytes in hexadecimal | E0 AE 95 |
HTML numeric references use decimal or hexadecimal code point values and end with a semicolon. The hexadecimal form starts with &#x. JavaScript output uses \u and four hex digits for each UTF-16 code unit. CSS output ends every numeric escape with a space so the next hexadecimal-looking character cannot be absorbed into the escape.
These are string representations, not complete HTML, JavaScript or CSS files. For JavaScript, JSON and CSS, add the surrounding string quotes required by your destination. Do not paste HTML entities into a JavaScript string expecting JavaScript to decode them; choose the format for the parser that will read it.
Decode Codes Back to Tamil
Switch Direction to Codes to Text. Paste one representation, then leave Decode Format on Auto Detect or select the exact format. HTML decoding accepts decimal and hexadecimal numeric references in the same input. Code point lists must contain U+ tokens separated by whitespace; byte lists use two hexadecimal digits per byte.
Auto Detect uses a fixed priority: HTML references, JavaScript escapes, U+ tokens, URL codes, CSS escapes, then byte pairs. It is intended for one format at a time. A literal piece of text that resembles an escape is ambiguous; choose a format deliberately before using the result. Decoding runs once, so double-encoded input may require a second pass.
Invalid UTF-8 bytes, out-of-range code points and unpaired JavaScript surrogates produce an error. For URL components, a plus sign stays a plus sign; this is not an HTML form decoder where plus may stand for a space. The decoded result is always inserted as text, never interpreted as markup.
Keep Tamil as UTF-8 in New Projects
For a new HTML document, save the file as UTF-8 and declare <meta charset="utf-8"> near the start of the head. You can then write Tamil directly in the source. Numeric references are useful for inspecting values or working with a constrained interchange format, but they are not necessary merely because the text is Tamil. Markup characters still need the escaping appropriate to their HTML context.
Encoding, collation and fonts solve different problems. A font draws the text; UTF-8 stores and transports it; collation orders it. Converting to entities changes the source representation without repairing missing fonts or a legacy-font encoding. The breakdown is useful when two similar-looking strings actually contain different signs.
For MySQL projects, utf8mb4 supports the full Unicode range, including supplementary characters that may accompany Tamil text. Check the connection and column character sets as well as the database default. For Excel CSV exchange, Microsoft documents opening UTF-8 CSV files normally when a BOM is present; otherwise use Data, Get Data, From Text/CSV to choose the import encoding.
The Tamil character names here come from Unicode 17.0’s character database. Spaces, Latin letters and other scripts are labelled Outside Tamil Block rather than assigned guessed names. This makes the table an exact Tamil reference while still allowing you to convert mixed-language content.
Questions People Ask
How do I get an HTML entity for a Tamil letter?
Paste the character and copy HTML Decimal or HTML Hex from the output. For க, these are க and க. They identify the same Unicode character in two numeric bases. Copy the complete reference including its semicolon when placing it in HTML text.
Can this decode Tamil HTML codes back to text?
Yes, choose Codes to Text and paste numeric HTML references into the input. Auto Detect recognises the supported representations; choose a specific Decode Format when the input is ambiguous. This numeric converter does not decode named HTML references such as &, so do not treat it as a general HTML parser.
Do I need HTML entities to put Tamil on a website?
No, a UTF-8 HTML document can contain Tamil directly. Save the source as UTF-8 and declare <meta charset="utf-8"> near the start of its head. Entities are useful for inspecting character values or meeting a particular interchange requirement, but they do not replace choosing the correct document encoding.
Why does a Tamil syllable have multiple rows in Character Breakdown?
The table lists code points rather than whole visible syllables, so a consonant and its vowel sign or pulli can occupy separate rows. It preserves the sequence you pasted instead of normalising it. Compare the actual values when two similar-looking strings produce different rows or counts in the breakdown.
Are JavaScript and JSON escapes the same in this tool?
The JS / JSON output uses four-digit UTF-16 escape sequences suitable inside quoted strings in both formats. Characters above U+FFFF become surrogate pairs. Add the surrounding string quotes required by your destination, and choose the correct output format rather than pasting HTML entities into JavaScript and expecting them to decode.
Why does the CSS output put a space after every escape?
The trailing space terminates the numeric CSS escape so a following hexadecimal-looking character is not absorbed into it. Keep that separator when copying this tool’s CSS output into a string. It is part of the escape representation, so do not remove it merely because you did not type spaces in the original.
Why does a plus sign stay a plus when I decode URL text?
This tool decodes URL component escapes rather than HTML form encoding, so it does not translate a plus sign into a space. Select URL Percent-Encoding only for that representation. If your source comes from a submitted form, account for its form-specific decoding rules before comparing the result with the original text.
Why does Character Breakdown stop after 200 code points?
The display limits its detailed rows to the first 200 code points, while the total count and conversion still use the whole input. For an issue later in a long passage, paste a smaller extract containing that character. A missing row past the display limit does not mean the text was truncated.
Will HTML entities fix Bamini text or missing Tamil fonts?
No, entity conversion represents the Unicode characters already present; it does not repair legacy text or install glyphs. Convert Bamini with the font converter first. If the characters are already correct but show as boxes, use the display guide rather than encoding the same text again.
Can decoding HTML references run pasted markup or scripts here?
No, the decoded result is inserted as plain text rather than interpreted as HTML markup. The tool processes the input in this browser and does not upload it for conversion. This protects this display, but it does not make the result safe to insert unescaped into an arbitrary HTML context elsewhere.
