Short answer

Bamini is a pre-Unicode Tamil font that draws Tamil shapes over English keys, so without the font தமிழ் shows as jkpo;. To convert, paste the Bamini text in the box above or open your Word .docx file. Then copy the Unicode Tamil, or download the converted document with its formatting kept. Everything runs in your browser.

Background

Where Bamini Text Comes From

Bamini is a Tamil font from the years before Unicode Tamil worked on ordinary computers. It became one of the most common Tamil fonts in Sri Lanka and across the diaspora, used for school notes, church and temple newsletters, magazines, wedding invitations and office letters. Many of those files are still in use, and many are now unreadable.

The font works by drawing a Tamil shape in place of each English key, following a typewriter-style layout. Type tzf;fk; with Bamini selected and the screen shows வணக்கம். The file, though, only ever contained the English letters. Send it to someone without the font, or open it on a phone, and they see tzf;fk;.

Converting to Unicode fixes this for good. Unicode Tamil is the same in every font, so the text can be read, searched, copied and spell-checked anywhere.

Step by step

Convert a Bamini Word Document to Unicode

  1. Press Open file above (under More on a phone) and choose the .docx file. You can also drag the file onto the converter.
  2. The converter lists every font in the document, with the text each one holds as it is stored. Bamini is picked out by its name. If your Tamil is in a Bamini-style font with another name, set it to From Bamini.
  3. Check the preview. Each paragraph is shown as stored, such as md;Gs;s mk;kh>, and as Unicode, அன்புள்ள அம்மா, so you can see that it reads naturally.
  4. Choose the Unicode font for the converted text. Nirmala UI is installed with Windows and Microsoft Office, so it is the safe choice.
  5. Press Download. You get a copy named after your file with -unicode at the end. Your original file is not changed.

Only the text in the fonts you chose is rewritten. Bold, italics, sizes, colours, tables, images, headers and footers, footnotes, text boxes and tracked changes stay as they were, and English words in other fonts are left alone. A word split between two runs of formatting, which Word does more often than you would think, is joined up before it is converted, so N + fhtpy; still becomes கோவில்.

Copy and Paste Instead

For a short piece of text, or a file that isn't a .docx, copy the text and paste it into the left box. It will look like English letters and symbols. That is expected. Press Copy, paste into your document with Keep Text Only so the Bamini font isn't carried across, and set a Unicode Tamil font. Plain-text files open with Open file too, and Download .txt saves UTF-8 that Word and Notepad read correctly.

How it works

What the Converter Untangles

Bamini stores letters in the order they are drawn. Signs that appear on the left of a letter are typed first, and some vowels are split around it. These are the keys that need more than a one-for-one swap.

Bamini keyDrawsWhy it matters
nNiெ ே ைTyped before the letter they belong to: nf is கெ, Nf is கே, if is கை.
hாAlso the second half of ொ and ோ: nfh is கொ, Nfh is கோ.
sளAlso closes ௌ: nfs is கௌ.
;்The dot (புள்ளி). A real semicolon is typed as @.
,இA real comma is typed as >.
F$GG+கு கூ பு பூMany u and uu forms have their own glyph.
=ஸ்ரீOne key for the whole ligature.
[\]`ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹThe grantha letters.

Troubleshooting

When the Result Looks Wrong

Most Words Are Garbled, Not Just a Few

The text was probably typed in a different legacy font. Try the Tamil Unicode converter, which guesses the font for you. If the original shows accented letters like ¾Á¢ú, it is TSCII, not Bamini.

Commas Have Turned Into இ

In Bamini, the comma key draws இ and a real comma is typed as >. If someone typed commas in an English font inside the document, they come out as இ. Search for the stray letters and replace them.

The Unicode Looks Right Here but Shows Boxes in Word

The text is fine; the font isn't. Select it and set Nirmala UI, which comes with Windows and Office, or Noto Sans Tamil. Latha is not always there: on Windows 10 it belongs to the optional Tamil Supplemental Fonts. If the font menu still shows Bamini, paste again with Keep Text Only.

Some Words in the Converted Document Are Still English Letters

Those words are in a font the converter left alone. Open the original file again, find that font in the list (its sample will look like jkpo;), set it to From Bamini and download again.

Text Copied From a PDF

If the PDF was made from a Bamini document, copying usually gives Bamini letters, which convert as normal. If you get empty boxes or random symbols, the PDF holds no usable text. Convert the original Word file instead.

The File Is a .doc, Not a .docx

Older Word files can't be read here. Open the file in Word, choose File → Save As, pick Word Document (.docx), and open the new file.

The Left Box Already Shows Tamil Letters

Then the text is Unicode already and needs no conversion. Unicode Tamil pasted into the box is left as it is.

Questions People Ask

How do I convert Bamini to Unicode?

Paste the Bamini characters into the input box with From set to Bamini and To set to Unicode. The converted Tamil appears in the output automatically. Copy the result into your destination and apply a Unicode Tamil font, then compare names and vowel signs with the original before sharing it.

My Word file shows Tamil, but the converter shows English letters. Is that right?

Yes, a Bamini font draws Tamil shapes over stored Latin characters, and the input box exposes those characters. Paste the actual text rather than a screenshot of it. The converter needs those stored keys to reconstruct Unicode Tamil; installing the Bamini font on this page is not required.

Can I convert a whole Bamini Word document?

Yes, choose Open file and select a DOCX, then inspect the font list before downloading the Unicode copy. Select the Bamini runs for conversion and leave unrelated fonts unchanged. The original file is read locally and remains separate, so keep it for a line-by-line comparison of the result.

Why are some English words turned into Tamil?

Plain pasted text loses the font information that distinguished English words from Bamini characters. Convert only the Bamini passages, or open the original DOCX and select its legacy font runs. If English and Tamil used the same stored font, check and restore the English manually against the original.

Why did a comma become a Tamil letter after Bamini conversion?

The comma character occupies a Tamil letter position in the Bamini mapping, so a literal English comma in a pasted passage can be interpreted as legacy Tamil. Check punctuation against the original. For mixed-font Word files, use the DOCX workflow to leave English-font runs outside the Bamini conversion.

What if my pasted Bamini text is already Unicode Tamil?

You do not need another conversion if the text already contains the correct Unicode Tamil characters. Use the detection page if you are unsure, and compare the source rather than repeatedly converting it. Keep a copy before changing settings so you can undo a mistaken encoding choice.

Can I convert text copied from a Bamini PDF?

Try a short selectable extract first and compare the result with the visible PDF. The converter works on the copied character sequence, so it cannot reconstruct text that copied as unrelated symbols or missing characters. Use the original Word document when available, or OCR for a scanned page.

Why are some words in my converted DOCX still Latin characters?

They may be in font runs you left unchanged in the Word conversion settings. Reopen the original DOCX and inspect each font’s sample before deciding which runs are Bamini. Do not convert every font indiscriminately, because genuine English text also uses Latin characters and needs to remain English.

Can I convert a confidential Bamini letter without uploading it?

Yes, this tool reads and converts the text on your device rather than uploading the document. Pasted input can be retained in this browser for later visits. On a shared computer, clear it after downloading your result and keep the original and converted files in your own storage.

Can I type new Unicode text using the Bamini keys I know?

Yes, use our Bamini keyboard for new writing with familiar key sequences and Unicode output. This converter is useful when the Bamini text already exists in a file. Keeping new work in Unicode saves you from converting it again whenever you need to share it.
