Short answer

Unicode to Bamini turns standard Tamil text into the English-letter codes that the Bamini font draws as Tamil, so தமிழ் becomes jkpo;. Paste Unicode Tamil above, press Copy, and paste into your DTP layout or Word document set in Bamini. Keep English words in a separate English font.

When you need it

Why Anyone Still Uses Bamini

For anything new, Unicode is the better choice. But a lot of Tamil print work still runs on Bamini, and the reasons are practical rather than stubborn.

  • Print and DTP studios. Older desktop publishing programs cannot arrange Unicode Tamil correctly. Vowel signs land on the wrong side of the letter, or ligatures fall apart. Those programs handle Bamini fine, because to them it is just English letters in a special font.
  • Templates built years ago. Invitation cards, calendars, school certificates and magazine layouts were often designed around Bamini. Changing the font means redoing the layout, so the template stays and new text has to match it.
  • Typists who learned the Bamini layout. Some offices still keep their records in Bamini so everyone can edit them the same way.
  • Sign, sticker and cutting machines whose software only accepts certain fonts.

In all of these cases the sensible workflow is to write and keep your text in Unicode, and convert a copy to Bamini only at the last step.

Step by step

Convert Unicode to Bamini for a Print Layout

  1. Write or paste your text in Unicode Tamil. You can type it with the Tamil typing editor or copy it from an e-mail, a document or a WhatsApp message.
  2. Paste it into the left box above. The right box shows the Bamini version as plain characters, for example tzf;fk; for வணக்கம்.
  3. Read the note under the boxes. If it lists English letters, those parts need an English font in your layout.
  4. Press Copy and paste into your DTP program or template. Paste as plain text if the program offers it.
  5. Select the pasted text and set the font to Bamini. The letters turn into Tamil. Check a few words with ொ, ோ and ஸ்ரீ, since those are where wrong fonts show first.

Download .txt saves the Bamini text with one byte per character, the way older Windows programs expect plain text to look.

Examples

Unicode Tamil and Its Bamini Spelling

Two things happen in the conversion. Signs that sit on the left of a letter, ெ ே ை, move in front of it, because Bamini stores text in drawing order. And the split vowels ொ ோ ௌ are broken into the two pieces you see on paper, one on each side of the letter. The converter also uses Bamini's ready-made shapes for letters like கு, டி and ஸ்ரீ, so the result matches what a Bamini typist would have typed.

Limits

What Bamini Can't Hold

English letters. Bamini uses every English letter for a Tamil shape, so a word like Email comes out as Tamil in the Bamini font. Keep English words in a separate text box or font.

Some punctuation. Bamini's comma, semicolon and apostrophe keys are taken by Tamil letters, so the converter writes them in the slots Bamini uses instead: comma as >, semicolon as @, apostrophe as |. Full stops, question marks, brackets and numbers stay as they are.

Rare letters. ஙு and ஞு have no shape of their own in Bamini, so they are written as the letter plus a separate u sign. They are rare in modern Tamil, but check them if your text has them.

Questions People Ask

How do I convert Unicode Tamil to Bamini?

Paste Unicode Tamil into the input with From set to Unicode and To set to Bamini. Copy the output into the destination document and apply its Bamini font. Keep your Unicode original, then compare the rendered legacy text with it before passing the file to a printer or recipient.

Why does the Bamini output look like English letters?

That is the raw legacy character sequence, which needs a matching Bamini font to draw Tamil shapes. Seeing Latin letters in this output is expected and does not by itself mean conversion failed. Check the result in the intended document after applying Bamini rather than judging the plain character string.

Where can I get the Bamini font for the converted output?

Our Bamini font page provides the public file, preview and provenance notice, including the fact that its original licence is unknown. Availability does not establish permission for every use. If a printer supplies a font, test that exact copy against the output before approving your document.

What happens to English words in Unicode-to-Bamini conversion?

English letters can clash with Tamil glyph positions in the Bamini font, and the tool displays a warning when that happens. Keep those words in an English font after pasting into the destination. Plain-text output cannot attach a different font to each word, so inspect mixed-language passages manually.

Can I convert a Unicode Word document to Bamini as a file?

No, the DOCX workflow converts legacy text to Unicode, not an entire Unicode document to Bamini. Copy the needed passage, convert it as text and place it in your layout. Keep the original Unicode file, because this text workflow does not carry Word formatting or page structure across.

Should I send Bamini output directly in a phone message?

Send the Unicode original when the recipient needs readable Tamil text on a phone. Bamini output is for a destination that specifically applies the legacy font. Use this conversion for an explicit Bamini requirement, and keep both versions clearly labelled so you do not accidentally share the legacy string.

Why does the converter warn that a character has no Bamini glyph?

The selected mapping has no legacy representation for that character, so the output leaves it as Unicode and reports it. Inspect the warning before downloading a file. Do not assume an unmapped symbol will print correctly in Bamini; use a suitable separate font or agree an alternative with the recipient.

How do I save the converted Bamini text as a file?

Use the download action in the converter toolbar, available through More on a narrow screen. The legacy output is saved as tamil-bamini.txt using legacy bytes. This is a text file rather than a formatted Word document; apply the destination font and verify the result in your target program.

Can I check a Unicode-to-Bamini result by converting it back?

Yes, use Swap to put the result into the opposite conversion direction and compare it with your Unicode original. Keep the original separately before doing this. A round trip helps reveal mapping problems, but it does not prove that your printer’s installed Bamini font or mixed English formatting matches.

Do I need to convert text typed with Latha to Bamini differently?

No, if the text is Unicode Tamil, the source typeface does not change this conversion. Paste the characters with From set to Unicode and select Bamini as the destination. If you are unsure whether an old file is really Unicode, use the detection tool before processing it.
