How it types

Consonant First, Then the Sign

InScript types exactly what Unicode stores, one piece at a time. Press a consonant and you get it with its inherent அ; press a sign key next and it joins. There are no joining rules to learn and nothing waits for the next key.

  • Vowel signs are under your left hand, consonants under your right.
  • D is the pulli: K D gives க்.
  • Shift on a sign key gives the vowel letter: Shift D is அ.
  • Shift on a consonant key often gives a related letter: N is ல and Shift N is ள; V is ந and Shift V is ன.

Use InScript on Your Own Computer and Phone

On Windows, add Tamil, open its language options and choose the keyboard named Tamil, which is InScript. On Linux, add ta-inscript through m17n. Apple’s current Tamil input-source list does not include InScript; use this online keyboard on a Mac if you do not have a separate InScript input source.

Follow the exact steps for Windows 11, Windows 10, Mac or Linux. On a phone, you can use this online tool’s on-screen keys in the browser. For a system keyboard, inspect your phone’s available input layouts rather than assuming that a Tamil language option uses InScript.

Keep your system keyboard on English while practising on this page. Select the system Tamil layout only when you want to type directly in another app.

Questions People Ask

What is the InScript Tamil keyboard?

InScript (Indian Script) is the Government of India standard keyboard for Indian languages. It puts the same sounds on the same keys in every script, so a Hindi, Malayalam or Tamil InScript typist uses the same finger positions. It is the layout Windows lists simply as "Tamil" (its Tamil99 layout is listed separately as "Tamil 99").

How do I type a vowel sign in InScript?

Type the consonant first, then the sign key: K then F gives கி. Every sign, including the two-part ones, has its own key, so கொ is K `, in the order Unicode stores it. Follow that input sequence even when a sign appears to the left on screen.

How do I type a vowel on its own, like அ or இ?

Hold Shift on the key of its sign. Shift D is அ, Shift F is இ, Shift E is ஆ. Use the normal key for a dependent sign after a consonant, and the Shift version when you need the independent vowel. Check both labels on the chart.

Why do two keys give the same letter?

InScript is shared with scripts like Hindi that have aspirated consonants (क and ख). Tamil does not, so those positions repeat the plain letter: K and I are both க, L and O are both த. This follows the Windows layout exactly.

Should I learn InScript or Tamil99?

Learn InScript if you also type another Indian language, or if your office computers use the Windows "Tamil" keyboard. Tamil99 was designed for Tamil alone and joins letters for you, so most words need fewer keystrokes. Both are free to practise here.

Do I need to change my keyboard settings?

Not on this page. It reads the physical key you press, so your computer can stay on English. Copy the Unicode text into any app. To type InScript everywhere, add the Tamil keyboard in your operating system settings. Select the matching source only when you leave this page to type directly in another application.

Where is the pulli key on this InScript keyboard?

Press D after the consonant to add its pulli. This is different from Tamil99, where the pulli key is F. Keep the InScript chart visible while practising and enter one consonant at a time. If your keys follow Tamil99 positions instead, check that you opened this page and left your system keyboard on English.

Can I enter Tamil digits with AltGr on this page?

No. This online InScript keyboard includes the normal and Shift layers, but does not implement the AltGr Tamil digit and symbol layer. Use the Tamil symbols keyboard to copy those characters, then paste them into your paragraph. Do not treat the absence of an AltGr symbol here as evidence that the character is missing from Unicode.

Why does an InScript vowel mark appear before the consonant on screen?

That is the displayed shape of the Tamil letter, not the order you should type here. Enter the consonant first, then its vowel sign using the InScript chart. The renderer positions the sign around the consonant. Do not insert spaces to move a sign visually; that changes the text. Typewriter and Bamini use different input sequences, explained on their own pages.

Can I practise InScript without memorising every key first?

Yes. Tap the chart to enter a short word, then repeat it using the corresponding physical keys with the editor focused. Learn a small group of consonants and vowel signs before adding Shift vowels. For a reference beside your desk, download the InScript image from the layout charts page. Keep using one layout while building finger memory.
