What to Type for Each Letter
Capitals pick the harder letters: N ண, L ள, R ற. A vowel after a consonant joins it: ki கி, koo கூ, kai கை. A consonant on its own gets a dot: k க். To learn the scheme with a chart that lights up as you type, try English to Tamil typing.

Troubleshooting
Tamil Typing Not Working? Quick Fixes
The five problems people hit most, and what fixes each one.
- Tamil shows as empty boxes
- Boxes mean the app or device has no font with Tamil letters. Choose a Unicode Tamil font in that app: Nirmala UI comes with Windows 10 and 11, and Noto Sans Tamil and other free Tamil fonts work on any computer. For every device and app, see Tamil text not showing.
- A word converts to the wrong spelling
- Tap or click the word to see other spellings and pick one. Straight after it converts, Backspace gives your English letters back. Capitals pick the harder letters (
Nண,Lள,Rற) andzhgives ழ; Typing help above the editor lists every letter. The editor remembers the spellings you choose. - Your phone keyboard changes the English letters
- The editor asks the keyboard not to correct or capitalise, but some keyboards still swap
vanakkamfor an English word. In Gboard, open its settings, then Text correction, and turn off automatic corrections. On a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings, General management, Samsung Keyboard settings, and turn off Auto replace under Smart typing. - Nothing converts when you type
- Check the switch above the text says தமிழ், not English (Ctrl G flips it). Words convert when you press Space or a punctuation mark, not letter by letter. If your keyboard is set to Tamil, it already types Tamil and the editor leaves that alone: switch it back to English letters. A browser extension that changes typing can also catch the keys first, so turn it off for this site.
- Pasted text looks wrong in another app
- If the letters turn into boxes, set a Unicode Tamil font in that app. If you see Latin gibberish such as
வ, the text was saved or opened with the wrong encoding: paste it into the Tamil Unicode converter, which detects it. Old design software that only takes the Bamini font needs More, Convert to Bamini font.

Questions People Ask
How do I type Tamil using an English keyboard?
Type the word the way it sounds, in English letters, then press space. vanakkam becomes வணக்கம், nanri becomes நன்றி. If the first suggestion is not the word you meant, press a number key (or tap the word) to pick another.
How do I type ண, ள, ற and ழ?
Use capitals for the harder letters: N for ண, L for ள, R for ற, and zh for ழ. So paLLi gives பள்ளி and thamizh gives தமிழ். You can also type in lowercase and choose the right spelling from the suggestions.
Is this Tamil typing online tool free? Do I need to install anything?
It is free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create. It works on Android phones, iPhones, and Windows, Mac or Linux computers. If you use it every day, you can add it to your home screen and open it like an app.
Is my text private?
Yes. Conversion happens on your device; the words you type in this editor are never sent to a server. Your drafts are saved only in this browser so they are still here if you close the tab. Download a copy before clearing browser data if you want to keep the writing.
Can I keep more than one Tamil draft?
Yes. Open Drafts above the editor (under More on a phone) to start a new draft, switch between drafts, rename one, or delete one. Each draft shows its word count and when you last edited it, and Undo brings back a draft you deleted by mistake. Drafts are kept only in this browser, up to 50, so they do not appear on your other devices.
Can it read my Tamil text aloud?
Yes, when the browser provides a Tamil voice. Select Listen from More to read the text, or select a passage first to hear only that part. The editor identifies online voices because their provider may receive the text. For voice setup, speed controls and troubleshooting, open Tamil text to speech.
Can I paste the Tamil text into WhatsApp, Word or Facebook?
Yes. Select Copy to take the Unicode Tamil text, then paste it into your message or document. This copies text rather than the editor’s appearance, so check the destination before sharing. For application-specific font or display problems, use the Tamil font troubleshooting guide.
A word came out wrong. How do I fix it?
Tap or click the Tamil word. Other spellings appear, with the one in your text marked; pick the right one and it is swapped in place. Straight after a word converts, Backspace also turns it back into English letters. Ctrl Z undoes as usual, and Esc keeps the current word in English.
Can I save, print or download my Tamil text?
Yes. Open More to download a plain text file (.txt) or a file that opens in Microsoft Word (.doc), to save the text as a PNG image you can post as a WhatsApp status, or to Print it. Print sends only your text, in a Tamil font, without the rest of the page. Everything is made on your device.
How do I type ஃ (aaytham)?
Open Typing help above the editor (under More on a phone), go to Grantha and marks and tap ஃ: it goes in where your cursor is. In English loanwords, f gives ஃப on its own, so fan becomes ஃபேன். Check the completed word before copying it.
Can I see what to type for each letter while I write?
Yes. Typing help opens a small panel inside the editor with every vowel, consonant, grantha letter and mark, and the keys for each. Tap a letter to add it at the cursor. The Hints tab explains the letters English spelling cannot tell apart (ந ன ண, ல ள ழ, ர ற). The panel is built from the same rules the editor uses, so what it shows is what you get.
Can I write in full screen?
Yes. Press the full screen button (the four corners, next to More; on a phone it is in the More menu). The editor fills the screen and the text sits in a comfortable column. Press Esc or the same button to leave. On an iPhone, where browsers cannot go full screen, the editor fills the window instead.
How do I get my text in the Bamini font for printing or DTP?
Open More and choose Convert to Bamini font. Your text opens in the Unicode to Bamini converter, ready to copy into a document set in Bamini. Use this only for old design software that needs Bamini; everywhere else, the Unicode text from the editor is the right choice.
Why is my Tamil draft missing on another device?
Drafts belong to the browser where you wrote them and do not sync between devices. Return to that browser and open Drafts, under More on a phone. Before moving to another device, download a text copy from More. Keeping a separate copy also protects work if you clear site data.
How can I make Tamil text easier to read while typing?
Use Larger text to increase the editor’s display size, or Smaller text to reduce it. These controls help you read while composing; they do not change the words you typed. For a picture with a chosen layout and text size, use the Tamil quote maker.
Is this editor suitable for Tamil typewriting exam practice?
Use it for composing Tamil, but choose a dedicated practice page for timed typing. This editor converts phonetic spellings and offers word suggestions, so it does not reproduce a fixed keyboard typing test. Open the Tamil typing test for practice, and check your exam instructions for the required layout.
