On Our Server, Two Steps
Meta's M2M100 model reads the Tamil and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Malayalam. The English step can flatten the gender and politeness Malayalam needs, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

The Closest Relative Tamil Has
Tamil and Malayalam belong to the same small branch of the Dravidian family; Glottolog places them together in a Tamil-Malayalam subgroup. Most scholars trace Malayalam to the early Tamil spoken along the west coast, which became a separate literary language over the following centuries. Daily words still line up closely: வீடு and വീട്, கண் and കണ്ണ്, வழி and വഴി, even the same ழ sound.
The biggest grammar difference is in the verb. Tamil verbs change for the person doing the action: போகிறேன் (I go), போகிறான் (he goes), போகிறார்கள் (they go). Malayalam dropped those endings, so one form serves everyone: ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു, അവൻ പോകുന്നു, അവർ പോകുന്നു. When you translate from Tamil you lose nothing, but you must keep the pronoun, because the verb no longer tells you who is speaking.
Malayalam also took in far more Sanskrit than Tamil did. Where Tamil reaches for a native word, Malayalam often uses a Sanskrit one: Tamil மகிழ்ச்சி against Malayalam സന്തോഷം, Tamil மருத்துவமனை against Malayalam ആശുപത്രി. A literal Tamil word may be understood in Kerala, but it can sound old-fashioned or poetic.
Traps for Machine Translation
Look-alike words are the main risk. Malayalam വെള്ളം is water, while Tamil வெள்ளம் is a flood. Malayalam അവസരം is an opportunity, while Tamil அவசரம் is a rush. Malayalam അമ്പലം is a temple, while Tamil அம்பலம் is a public place. Tools that lean on spelling similarity can carry the wrong sense straight across.
Politeness does not map one to one. Tamil நீங்கள் is the safe respectful "you", but Malayalam നിങ്ങൾ can sound blunt to an elder. Keralites more often use a kinship word (ചേട്ടൻ, ചേച്ചി), a title, or the formal താങ്കൾ. If a translation addresses your grandmother with നിങ്ങൾ, rephrase it.
Engines also flatten Tamil spoken forms. Write the Tamil in its standard form first (சாப்பிட்டீர்களா, not சாப்டீங்களா), and the Malayalam that comes back will be cleaner.
Typing Malayalam Script
The Malayalam script is larger than the Tamil one. It keeps separate letters for voiced and aspirated sounds (ക ഖ ഗ ഘ where Tamil has only க), and it joins consonants into stacked conjuncts instead of showing a visible dot. Tamil writes க்க with a புள்ளி on the first letter; Malayalam writes the same cluster as one shape, ക്ക.
Malayalam also has chillu letters such as ൻ, ൾ, ർ and ൽ, which stand for a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. Unicode encodes them as separate characters, so search and spell-check work better when your keyboard produces the chillu rather than a consonant plus virama. Windows includes a Malayalam layout, listed in Microsoft's keyboard layout reference.
You may see two styles of Malayalam writing: the traditional script with many ligatures, and a simplified reformed script adopted for typewriters and print in the twentieth century. Both use the same Unicode text; only the font changes the look.
Malayalam Speakers
The 2011 Census of India counted 3,48,38,819 people with Malayalam as their mother tongue, about 2.88 per cent of the population, most of them in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Tamil, at 6,90,26,881, is about twice as large.
The two communities overlap across the border. In the same census, Malayalam was the mother tongue of 1.01 per cent of people in Tamil Nadu, and Tamil of 1.50 per cent of people in Kerala.

Questions People Ask
Can a Tamil speaker understand Malayalam?
Partly, especially slow speech about everyday topics, because so many basic words are shared. Fast speech, the heavier Sanskrit vocabulary and the lack of person endings on verbs make full understanding harder without practice. Use the Tamil and Malayalam columns to compare a complete everyday expression first. Shared-looking words are a starting point, not enough to understand every sentence or to confirm a custom translation without checking its context.
How do you say thank you in Malayalam?
നന്ദി, which is spelled nandi but pronounced nanni. It answers Tamil நன்றி directly. Copy the Malayalam word from its phrasebook entry rather than trying to reproduce it using Tamil letter shapes. The Roman guide is there to help you read the expression while you become familiar with Malayalam script.
Does வெள்ளம் mean water in Malayalam?
Yes, Malayalam വെള്ളം means water, but in Tamil வெள்ளம் means a flood. Tamil water is தண்ணீர் or நீர் . Check the full sentence when the source contains this word. Similar sounds across the two languages can hide different meanings, so a word-by-word reading can lead to a different message from the one intended.
Why does Malayalam have no verb endings for "I" and "he"?
Malayalam does not use the same person endings as Tamil in these examples. The same Malayalam verb form works for these subjects, so ഞാൻ വരുന്നു and അവൾ വരുന്നു share വരുന്നു, while Tamil says வருகிறேன் and வருகிறாள் . When checking a Tamil-to-Malayalam translation, compare the intended subject and action rather than looking for a separate ending matching each Tamil verb. Keep a full phrasebook example beside the sentence while practising.
How do I address an older man politely in Malayalam?
ചേട്ടൻ (chettan, elder brother) is the friendly default, the way Tamil uses அண்ணா . For formal writing, use താങ്കൾ or the person's title. Read the relationship and politeness note before copying the expression into a message. If you do not know how the recipient prefers to be addressed, confirm that separately rather than letting an automatic translator decide.
Is Malayalam script harder than Tamil script?
It has more letters and many conjuncts, so it takes longer to learn. The logic is the same as Tamil: consonants with an inherent vowel, vowel signs around them, and a virama to remove the vowel. Copy a complete Malayalam word from the output when practising, so its vowel signs and consonant combinations stay together. Reading the Roman guide is useful initially, but it does not teach all the spelling distinctions.
Can this translate a Tamil message into Malayalam on my phone?
Yes. Paste the Tamil message and choose the server option if you want to send it for translation, or follow the Google Translate link. The Malayalam phrasebook remains available for its listed everyday expressions. Read which engine produced the answer: a matching phrase is different from a new machine translation of your whole message.
Can I copy Malayalam chillu letters from this translation?
Yes. Copy keeps the Malayalam Unicode text, including any chillu letters in the result. Keep a complete word together when correcting it rather than assembling it from fragments that merely look similar. If a Malayalam word looks broken after pasting, compare it with the original output before assuming the Tamil meaning was translated incorrectly.
Does the Malayalam pronunciation guide translate every Tamil sentence?
No. The Roman guide accompanies the Malayalam phrases listed in this page’s phrasebook. It is useful when you can read Tamil but are still learning Malayalam script. A fresh server translation has no automatic Roman guide here, so use the phrasebook’s full expression when it already fits the situation you want to describe.
Should Tamil names be translated into Malayalam meanings?
Usually you want the person’s name preserved by sound, with their preferred Malayalam spelling. Check names separately from the surrounding Tamil message, especially where a name is also an everyday word. For a school notice or invitation, ask the family to confirm the spelling rather than accepting a machine’s first attempt.
