Tamil Typing in MS Word

எம்எஸ் வேர்டில் தமிழ் தட்டச்சு

Word has no Tamil switch of its own. It types with your computer’s keyboard, so the work is a one-time setting in Windows or macOS, plus the right font.

Short answer

Add Tamil to Windows in Settings > Time & language > Language & region and add the Tamil Phonetic keyboard. In Word, press Windows + Space to switch to Tamil and type words in English letters; press Enter to accept a suggestion. Use a Unicode font such as Nirmala UI, not Bamini.

Type Tamil words in English letters. Space converts each word. While suggestions are open, use the arrow keys or numbers to pick, Escape keeps English. Alt plus Down arrow offers other spellings for the Tamil word at the cursor.

Step 1: Add a Tamil Keyboard to Windows

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region (on Windows 10: Time & Language > Language).

  2. Select Add a language, choose Tamil, and install it. It comes with the Tamil 99 keyboard.

  3. To type in English letters, open Tamil’s options (… then Language options), select Add a keyboard, and choose Tamil Phonetic.

The Tamil keyboard for PC guide has the full steps for Windows 10, Windows 11 and Mac, and fixes for when the keyboard will not appear.

Step 2: English to Tamil Typing in Word

Open Word and press Windows + Space until the taskbar shows த. With Tamil Phonetic, type a word as it sounds (for example thottam) and press Enter to accept தோட்டம், or use the arrow keys to choose another suggestion. With Tamil 99, type Tamil letters directly. Press Windows + Space again to go back to English.

On a Mac, add a Tamil input source in System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit (Anjal, Tamil 99 or Transliteration), then switch to it with Control + Space while you type in Word.

Step 3: Choose a Unicode Tamil Font

Tamil fonts available in Windows

Nirmala UIIncluded with Windows 7 to 11Covers Tamil and other Indian scripts. A safe default for documents you will share.
LathaWindows 11 optional feature: Tamil Supplemental FontsThe long-standing Windows Tamil font. Add it in Settings under optional features if Word does not list it.
VijayaWindows 11 optional feature: Tamil Supplemental FontsA second Tamil font in the same package.

Unicode fonts store real Tamil letters, so the document reads correctly on any computer or phone, even one without that font. For more choice, our Tamil fonts page previews free Unicode Tamil fonts with your own text.

Step 4: Tamil Spell Check (Optional)

  1. In Word, select File > Options > Language.

  2. Under Office authoring languages and proofing, select Add a Language…, choose Tamil, and select Add.

  3. If Tamil shows Proofing available rather than installed, download Microsoft’s Tamil Language Accessory Pack. Microsoft lists it as partly translating the Office menus and including Tamil proofing tools.

Old Bamini Documents in Word

Many older Tamil Word files were typed in legacy fonts such as Bamini, which put Tamil shapes on English letters. Open one on a computer without the font and you see text like “jkpo;”. Retyping is not necessary: open the .docx in the Bamini to Unicode converter. It finds the legacy-font text, converts it in your browser without uploading the file, and gives you a Unicode .docx. If you are not sure which font was used, the Tamil Unicode converter detects it.

Going the other way, for a press that still needs Bamini, use Unicode to Bamini.

Questions People Ask

How do I type Tamil in MS Word?

Word types with whatever keyboard Windows or macOS is using. Add Tamil in Windows Settings (the Tamil Phonetic keyboard lets you type in English letters), open Word, press Windows + Space to switch to Tamil, and type. Check the active keyboard indicator before typing an English sentence or reference number.

Which font is best for Tamil in Word?

Use a Unicode font. Nirmala UI comes with Windows and includes Tamil. Latha and Vijaya are in Windows 11’s optional Tamil Supplemental Fonts. Avoid Bamini and other legacy fonts for new work: the text breaks as soon as someone opens it without that font.

Can I type Tamil in Word without installing anything?

Yes. The Tamil keyboards are part of Windows and macOS. If you cannot change settings on the computer, type Tamil online in English letters and paste the result into Word. This gives you editable Unicode text, so check it in the document’s chosen font before sharing the file.

Does Word check Tamil spelling?

Only with Tamil proofing tools. Add Tamil under File > Options > Language > Office authoring languages and proofing. If Word says proofing is available but not installed, install Microsoft’s Tamil Language Accessory Pack, which includes Tamil proofing tools for Word.

My old Word file shows English letters instead of Tamil. How do I fix it?

It was typed in a legacy font such as Bamini. Open the .docx in our Bamini to Unicode converter: it converts the file on your device and gives you a Unicode .docx back. For an old .doc file, first save it as .docx in Word.

Can I use Google Input Tools in Word?

Not any more. The Windows version that typed into Word has been withdrawn, and the Chrome extension only works on web pages. Microsoft’s Tamil Phonetic keyboard does the same job in Word. For details, see what happened to Google Input Tools.

Why does choosing a Tamil font not make my keyboard type Tamil?

A font changes the appearance of text, while a keyboard determines which characters you enter. For new Unicode work in Word, select a Tamil input method such as Tamil Phonetic or Tamil 99 in Windows, then type. Use the font menu afterwards to style those characters; selecting Nirmala UI alone does not switch the keyboard.

How do I paste Tamil into Word without the website formatting?

Paste the Tamil, open Paste Options and choose Keep Text Only in desktop Word. The letters remain text while the source formatting is removed. Then choose a Unicode Tamil font for the paragraph. This is useful for a letter or office template where you want the document’s formatting rather than the website’s appearance.

Can I mix Tamil and English in the same Word document?

Yes. On Windows, use Windows + Space to switch between installed English and Tamil keyboards as you write. Switching affects what you type next; it does not translate existing words. Check the active keyboard indicator before entering names, reference numbers or an English sentence in a Tamil document.

Do I have to change the Windows display language to type Tamil in Word?

No. Windows Tamil input works while the Windows interface stays in your preferred language. Add Tamil under Settings > Time & language > Language & region and select the keyboard you need. Microsoft’s Tamil IME instructions distinguish input support from optional language features, so an English interface can still accept Tamil text.
