Check the Word, Then Check the Meaning

A suggestion is a reason to look again. It is not a verdict. A word can be correctly spelled and still be the wrong word for your sentence. Read your corrected paragraph once more before using it in a letter, application or assignment.

Three Confusable Letter Groups

Tamil grammar calls these letters மயங்கொலி. Their similar sounds can hide a change in meaning. The Tamil Virtual Academy references below explain the letter distinctions and give word pairs. Learn the whole word rather than replacing a letter everywhere.

The last row deliberately separates a spelling exercise from a vocabulary list. Do not assume that changing a letter creates another everyday word. The checker only offers alternatives found in its dictionary. It does not invent a definition for a generated spelling.

Which Rules Are Checked?

Word beginnings: traditional native Tamil words do not begin with ன or ண. The checker uses that rule only when the original is absent from its dictionary and a plausible dictionary alternative exists. Isolated letter names are excluded. Names, borrowed forms and quotations need individual judgment.

Word endings: traditional Tamil word endings exclude final ற். This is about the consonant with a pulli, not every syllable containing ற. A word such as காற்று has a vowel ending. Again, the tool requires a dictionary alternative before suggesting a change.

A necessary exception: final ந் is rare, but it is allowed. The grammar reference gives வெரிந் as an example. We do not use a blanket rule against final ந், or against internal ந. Compounds and borrowed vocabulary make broad replacement rules unreliable. We also do not infer ல, ள or ழ from position alone.

Linking consonants: in formal writing, அந்த, இந்த and எந்த take the matching க், ச், த் or ப் before a following word beginning with க, ச, த or ப. For example, இந்த புத்தகம்→இந்தப் புத்தகம். This check crosses spaces or tabs, but not punctuation or line breaks. Other doubling rules depend on grammatical structure and are outside this checker.

Dictionary Evidence and Limits

For each word, the checker generates alternatives with one or two changes within the three groups. It keeps dictionary matches and orders them by corpus frequency. An unknown word needs a common alternative with a clear lead over competing spellings. An existing dictionary word needs a much larger frequency gap and receives a softer “Did you mean?” message. Corpus frequency measures usage, not correctness.

The built-in list contains 200,000 entries. It is not an exhaustive dictionary of every Tamil inflection, dialect, name or technical term. It may contain nonstandard spellings, and a rare correct word can resemble a frequent one. This is a focused spelling aid, not a full grammar checker, translation service or guarantee of error-free Tamil.

The word எண்ணை illustrates the limit well. The Tamil Virtual Academy distinguishes it from எண்ணெய், oil. If you mean oil, choose எண்ணெய். If you are referring to a number, keep the original. The checker always presents this as a meaning-dependent choice rather than silently rewriting it.
