Tamil to Kannada Translation

Kannada keeps more of Tamil's grammar than any neighbour except Malayalam, yet it sounds different from the first word. The phrase notes show where the two languages part.

How it translates

What Happens to Your Tamil Text

Nothing leaves your device unless you press a button that says so. How we handle text.

  1. In Chrome on a Computer

Chrome 138 or later translates Tamil to Kannada itself. The first time, you press Download and translate and it fetches the language model; after that, sentences never leave your computer.

  2. On Our Server, Two Steps

Meta's M2M100 model reads the Tamil and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Kannada. The English step can flatten the gender and politeness Kannada needs, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

  3. 116 Phrases on Your Device

The phrasebook below is looked up first and never sends anything. It only shows an exact answer when your sentence matches a line.

A Close Relative With Its Own Sound

Glottolog puts Kannada and Tamil in the same Tamil-Kannada branch of South Dravidian, closer to each other than either is to Telugu. The grammar shows it. Like Tamil, Kannada verbs change for person and gender, with separate forms for he, she and it: ಅವನು ಬಂದನು, ಅವಳು ಬಂದಳು, ಅದು ಬಂದಿತು, matching வந்தான், வந்தாள், வந்தது.

The sound is what sets Kannada apart. A Tamil p at the start of a word often turns into h in Kannada: பால் is ಹಾಲು, புலி is ಹುಲಿ, பத்து is ಹತ್ತು. Once you know this shift, dozens of Kannada words become recognisable. Kannada words also tend to end in a vowel, so ஊர் becomes ಊರು and கண் becomes ಕಣ್ಣು.

Politeness lines up neatly. Kannada ನೀವು is the respectful "you", like Tamil நீங்கள், and polite commands end in -i or -iri: ಬನ್ನಿ (please come), ಹೇಳಿ (please tell). The informal ನೀನು matches Tamil நீ and has the same risks with strangers.

Where Translations Slip

Kannada has a written register and a spoken one, as Tamil does, and translation engines usually return the written forms. ಇಂದು (today) is correct in print, but people in Bengaluru say ಇವತ್ತು. A phrase that is grammatically right can still sound bookish, so the notes above give the spoken word where it differs.

Look-alike words are fewer than with Malayalam or Telugu, but they exist. Tamil பள்ளி is a school, while Kannada ಹಳ್ಳಿ, its relative through the p to h shift, is a village. Kannada ಅವಸರ keeps the Tamil sense of hurry, unlike its Telugu and Malayalam cousins, which mean need and opportunity.

Tools also mishandle Tamil words that Kannada does not use. Tamil வணக்கம் has no Kannada cognate in daily speech; the greeting is ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. Tamil நன்றி becomes ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು, a Sanskrit word, not a Dravidian one.

Typing the Kannada Script

Kannada and Telugu scripts share a common ancestor and look alike, with rounded letters and vowel signs that attach above, below and beside the consonant. Like Telugu, Kannada writes the second consonant of a cluster as a small subscript form under the first, so Tamil க்க is ಕ್ಕ in Kannada.

Kannada has separate letters for aspirated and voiced sounds (ಕ ಖ ಗ ಘ) where Tamil uses only க. When you type a Tamil name in Kannada, choose the letter by sound: முருகன் is ಮುರುಗನ್, with ಗ for the softened Tamil க.

Windows includes a Kannada layout, listed in Microsoft's keyboard layout reference. It follows the INSCRIPT pattern, so the key you press for ಕ is the same key that gives க on the Tamil INSCRIPT layout.

Kannada and Tamil Speakers

The 2011 Census of India counted 4,37,06,512 people with Kannada as their mother tongue, 3.61 per cent of the population, most of them in Karnataka. Tamil had 6,90,26,881.

Each language has a sizeable community in the other's state. The same census found that Tamil was the mother tongue of 3.45 per cent of people in Karnataka, and Kannada of 1.78 per cent in Tamil Nadu, so translation between the two is an everyday need in Bengaluru, Hosur and the border districts.

Questions People Ask

How do you say vanakkam in Kannada?

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (namaskaara). It works at any time of day and in any setting, just like the Tamil greeting. Use the phrasebook’s greeting entry to see the Kannada script and Roman guide together. Copy the full Kannada word into your message rather than retyping a sound-based spelling that you have not checked.

Why does Kannada say haalu for milk?

Many Tamil words that begin with p begin with h in Kannada. Tamil பால் (paal) is Kannada ಹಾಲು (haalu), and புலி (puli, tiger) is ಹುಲಿ (huli). The words share a Dravidian origin. Treat the examples as words to learn individually, not a rule for converting every Tamil p into a Kannada h. Use the translated phrase in context and confirm unfamiliar vocabulary before applying that sound pattern yourself.

Can I translate Tamil letter by letter into Kannada?

No. This tool translates complete expressions rather than replacing each Tamil letter with a Kannada letter. Use Tamil script for the source sentence and check the Kannada meaning of the whole result. If you only need to write a person’s name, ask for their preferred Kannada spelling and confirm that separately from the message.

What is the Kannada for "eppadi irukkeenga"?

ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಿ? (hegiddeeri?). The usual reply is ನಾನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ (naanu chennaagiddene), "I am well". Use the complete question from the phrasebook when addressing someone, and read its note before changing the wording. The Roman guide helps you read this listed expression without needing to recognise every Kannada character first.

Does ಹಳ್ಳಿ mean school, like Tamil பள்ளி?

No. The two words are related, but Kannada ಹಳ್ಳಿ means a village. A Kannada school is ಶಾಲೆ (shaale). This is a reason to compare the whole meaning rather than trusting a familiar sound. If you are translating directions, check whether the destination is a school or a village before sending the Kannada result.

Can I type Kannada with the same keys I use for Tamil?

If you use INSCRIPT, yes: Windows offers Kannada and Tamil layouts that follow the same INSCRIPT pattern, so matching sounds sit on the same keys. Use a Kannada keyboard to enter Kannada itself; selecting a Kannada translation target does not change your physical keyboard. Check the displayed layout on your device rather than assuming every Tamil key has an identical counterpart.

Can I translate Tamil written in English letters into Kannada?

Convert the Tamil words to Tamil script first using Convert to Tamil script when the input offers it. Check the converted words, especially names, before asking for Kannada. The Roman spellings beside Kannada phrasebook entries are pronunciation aids and do not mean that this input can convert Roman Kannada into Kannada script.

Why does a Kannada vowel sign appear before its consonant?

Kannada vowel signs can be displayed around a consonant even though the underlying text stores the consonant first. Copy the complete Kannada word from the translation rather than moving its visible pieces by hand. The same general distinction between character order and displayed position matters when you compare Kannada output with Tamil script.

Can I use these Tamil to Kannada phrases for a work message?

Use the Work category for a listed sentence that matches your message, then read its note before copying. If you need to add a deadline, colleague’s name or meeting place, translate the full revised Tamil sentence. Check that those details survived in Kannada instead of assuming a nearby phrasebook match includes them.

Does your Tamil to Kannada translator also give spoken audio?

Listen is offered only when your browser provides a suitable voice and there is text to read. If it is missing, use the Kannada Roman guide on a phrasebook entry for reading practice. A visible translation does not guarantee that the same device has a Kannada voice available to pronounce it.
