How it translates

What Happens to Your Kannada Text

Nothing leaves your device unless you press a button that says so. How we handle text.

  1. In Chrome on a Computer

Chrome 138 or later translates Kannada to Tamil itself. The first time, you press Download and translate and it fetches the language model; after that, sentences never leave your computer.

  2. On Our Server, Two Steps

Meta's M2M100 model reads the Kannada and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Tamil. The English step can flatten tone, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

  3. 116 Phrases on Your Device

The phrasebook below is looked up first and never sends anything. It only shows an exact answer when your sentence matches a line.

Guessing Tamil Words From Kannada

Reverse the p to h shift and many Tamil words appear. Kannada ಹಾಲು is Tamil பால், ಹುಲಿ is புலி, ಹತ್ತು is பத்து, and ಹೋಗು is போ. Kannada b at the start of a word often matches Tamil v: ಬಾ is வா (come), ಬೇಕು is வேண்டும் (want), ಬೇಡ is வேண்டாம் (do not want).

Then drop the final vowel. Tamil words usually end on a consonant with a புள்ளி, so ಊರು is ஊர், ಕಣ್ಣು is கண், and ಹೆಸರು (name) is பெயர். Leaving the Kannada -u on a Tamil word is the most common accent marker in writing.

The pattern is a guide, not a rule. Kannada ಹಳ್ಳಿ looks like Tamil பள்ளி, but the Tamil word means school; a Tamil village is கிராமம் or ஊர்.

Grammar You Already Know

Tamil verbs agree with the subject just as Kannada verbs do: வந்தேன் (I came) is ಬಂದೆ, வந்தாள் (she came) is ಬಂದಳು. You will not need to unlearn gender, because both languages separate he, she and it.

The polite forms match too. Use நீங்கள் where you would use ನೀವು, and end requests in -ங்கள் where Kannada uses -i: உட்காருங்கள் (please sit) for ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, சொல்லுங்கள் (please tell) for ಹೇಳಿ.

Reading and Typing Tamil

Tamil script has no aspirated letters and no subscript consonants. ಕ, ಖ, ಗ and ಘ are all written க, and a consonant cluster is written side by side with a புள்ளி on the first letter: ಕ್ಕ becomes க்க. Tamil words therefore look longer than their Kannada equivalents, but each letter is simpler.

Three Tamil letters need attention: ழ (zh, the sound in தமிழ்), ற (a stronger, trilled r) and ன (an n made with the tongue on the ridge behind the teeth). Kannada has no everyday equivalent for ழ, although Old Kannada once had a similar letter.

Windows lists Tamil, Tamil 99 and Tamil Anjal keyboard layouts in Microsoft's keyboard layout reference. If you already type Kannada on INSCRIPT, the Tamil INSCRIPT layout puts matching letters on the same keys.

Tamil in Karnataka and Beyond

In the 2011 Census of India, 3.45 per cent of people in Karnataka returned Tamil as their mother tongue, and Tamil had 6,90,26,881 speakers across India. Outside India, Tamil is an official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Spoken Tamil shortens the written forms shown here: போகிறேன் becomes போறேன், இருக்கிறது becomes இருக்கு. Use the written form when you type, and listen for the shared stem when people answer you in speech.

Questions People Ask

How do you say "hegiddeeri" in Tamil?

எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள் ? (eppadi irukkireergal?), or எப்படி இருக்கீங்க ? in speech. Reply with நான் நலமாக இருக்கிறேன் . Copy the complete polite Tamil question from the phrasebook while practising, keeping its Roman guide beside it. Check the person addressed before adapting the sentence for a friend, colleague or someone you do not know.

What is the Tamil for "nanage gottilla" (I do not know)?

எனக்குத் தெரியாது (enakku theriyaadhu). Like Kannada ನನಗೆ, Tamil uses "to me" ( எனக்கு ) for knowing. Use the complete Tamil expression rather than translating its parts back into Kannada one at a time. If you want to say what you do not know, include that in a new complete sentence and check the result separately.

Is "beku" the same as Tamil வேண்டும்?

Yes, they are related words with the same use. எனக்கு இது வேண்டும் is ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಬೇಕು, and எனக்கு இது வேண்டாம் is ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಬೇಡ. Compare the whole request in the phrasebook before using it. If your Kannada message adds an item, quantity or person, translate that full sentence and check that the Tamil output preserves the intended request or refusal.

How do I translate Kannada thanks into Tamil?

நன்றி (nandri). It replaces ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು in every situation, formal or casual. Use the Tamil word from its phrasebook entry and keep the Roman guide for reading practice. A longer message of thanks may need a complete sentence, so translate any additional explanation separately rather than copying only this word.

What does பள்ளி mean in Tamil?

A school. It is related to Kannada ಹಳ್ಳಿ, but the meanings have drifted apart, so do not use it for a village. Check whether the Kannada source names a village or a school before accepting the Tamil translation. Similar-looking sounds can hide different meanings, and the complete sentence matters more than a word-by-word comparison of the two scripts.

Does Tamil have a letter for the Kannada ಳ?

Yes, ள . Tamil also has ழ , a different sound with no letter in modern Kannada, as in தமிழ் and வாழைப்பழம் (banana). Keep the full Tamil word beside the sound comparison while practising. A letter correspondence helps with reading, but it does not convert a complete Kannada sentence into Tamil or guarantee the preferred spelling of a person’s name.

Can I type Roman Kannada into the Kannada to Tamil input?

Use Kannada script as the source. The Kannada Roman lines in the phrasebook help you read entries, but the tool does not turn Roman Kannada into Kannada letters. Paste a Kannada message or use a Kannada keyboard first, then translate the complete sentence rather than submitting an uncertain English-letter spelling.

Can I use Kannada to Tamil translation for a shop conversation?

Yes. Start with the Shopping entries when a listed Kannada request matches what you mean, and read the Tamil line with its Roman guide. For a new item, amount or quantity, translate your complete Kannada sentence. Check those details in the output rather than copying a closest phrase that asks something different.

Why do Kannada joined letters not look the same in Tamil?

Tamil and Kannada use different scripts with different letter combinations, so translation does not preserve the source’s visible shapes. Read the Tamil result as a new sentence rather than matching symbols one by one. If your goal is only to spell a Kannada name in Tamil, check that name separately with its owner.

Does Kannada to Tamil on your server pass through English?

Yes. Our server first translates Kannada to English, then uses an English-to-Indic model to write Tamil. Enter Kannada directly and review the final Tamil for the intended person, action and respect. For an ordinary request already listed in the phrasebook, compare that complete entry before using a newly generated sentence.
