Tamil Keyboard Download: The Best Apps for Android and iPhone

தமிழ் விசைப்பலகை செயலிகள்

Nine Tamil keyboards for phones, compared on layouts, price, ads, last update and the data each one says it collects.

Updated By TypeTamilOnline EditorialHow we check guides

Short answer

You may not need a download. iPhones include Tamil keyboards, and Gboard, the keyboard on many Android phones, types Tamil from English letters. Download another app for a specific need: Keyman for typewriter or Bamini layouts, Indic Keyboard for an open-source app that declares no data collection, or Desh for Tanglish with voice and handwriting in one app.

We are not affiliated with Apple, Google, Samsung, Desh Keyboard, Microsoft, SIL Global, IIT Bombay, Swathanthra Malayalam Computing or Azhagi, and nobody paid to be listed. Product names belong to their owners. We make a Tamil typing website, not a phone keyboard.

Tamil Keyboard Apps Compared

Every value comes from the official Google Play or App Store listing, or the developer’s own documentation, checked on 2 November 2026. Data practices are what each developer declares on Google Play; Google does not verify them. We have left out star ratings and download counts because they say little about Tamil typing.

iPhone Built-in Tamil Keyboard

By AppleApple: Add or change keyboards on iPhone

Apple’s feature list for iOS and iPadOS 27 names Alphabetic, Anjal and Tamil99 keyboards, plus Tamil transliteration: type vanakkam and get வணக்கம். Add it in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Our iPhone Tamil keyboard guide explains each layout.

Best for: nearly every iPhone and iPad user.

Pros

  • Already on your phone: four Tamil options, including transliteration from English letters.
  • As a system keyboard, it needs no Full Access permission.
  • Updated with iOS.

Cons

  • No Tamil typewriter or Bamini layout; for those you need Keyman.

Gboard

By GoogleGoogle PlayApp Store

Google added Tamil transliteration to Gboard for Android in April 2017. Add Tamil from Gboard’s settings, then pick the English-letter layout or the Tamil-script one; handwriting appears as a layout where Google offers it. The App Store listing names Tamil among the languages Gboard supports on iPhone. The Android Tamil keyboard guide has every step.

Best for: most Android users, especially if you type Tamil in English letters.

Pros

  • Free, and many Android phones already use it as their keyboard.
  • Tamil from English letters (since 2017) and a Tamil-script layout in one keyboard.
  • Updated often on Android: the latest release was 29 October 2026.

Cons

  • On iPhone the App Store version was last updated on 2 May 2022.
  • Google’s data label says it may collect audio and app activity, and that data can’t be deleted.

Samsung Keyboard

By SamsungSamsung: Keyboard settings

Open Samsung Keyboard settings, tap Languages and types, then Manage input languages, and download Tamil from the available languages. If it does not suit you, Gboard installs alongside it.

Best for: Samsung Galaxy owners who want to try Tamil before installing anything.

Pros

  • Already your default keyboard on a Galaxy, so there is nothing to install.
  • Switch languages with the globe key.

Cons

  • Samsung does not publish which Tamil layouts or features it offers, so check on your own phone.
  • Only on Samsung devices.

Desh Tamil Keyboard

By Desh Keyboard (ClusterDev Technologies Private Limited)Google PlayApp Store

Desh Tamil Keyboard is made by ClusterDev Technologies Private Limited of Ernakulam, Kerala, which publishes it as Desh Keyboard. Its Play listing describes four ways to type: Tanglish, voice, handwriting and choosing each Tamil letter. The listing says no private information or card details are collected, and that anonymous statistics may be collected under its privacy policy. On iPhone, its listing says you may turn on Allow Full Access so that it can send crash reports. If you only need Tamil now and then, a web editor like ours does the job without installing a keyboard.

Best for: Android users who mainly type Tanglish and want voice and handwriting in the same keyboard.

Pros

  • Built around Tanglish: type in English letters and get Tamil words, with a key to turn Tamil off for English.
  • On Android, voice typing, handwriting and a letter-by-letter alphabet mode in one app.
  • Actively updated on Android: 31 October 2026.

Cons

  • The Android app contains ads and offers in-app purchases.
  • Its Google Play data label says it may share device IDs with third parties, and that data can’t be deleted.
  • The iPhone version is simpler (Tanglish with predictions) and was last updated in November 2025.

Microsoft SwiftKey

By MicrosoftGoogle PlayMicrosoft: Transliteration in SwiftKey

Microsoft says SwiftKey for Android supports Tamil transliteration: type on the QWERTY layout and Tamil words appear in the prediction bar. Its Tamil-script layout follows Tamil 99, which suits typists who learned that layout on a computer.

Best for: Android users who want Tamil99-style script and English-letter typing in one keyboard.

Pros

  • On Android, swipe the space bar to move between English-letter typing and a Tamil layout that follows the Tamil 99 convention.
  • Updated in late October 2026, and you can ask Microsoft to delete your data.

Cons

  • On iPhone, Microsoft lists only “Tamil (English)”, and transliteration is not supported there.
  • The Android listing says it contains ads, and its data label lists location and personal info among the data it may collect.

Indic Keyboard

By Swathanthra Malayalam ComputingGoogle PlayCode on GitHub

Indic Keyboard is a free-software keyboard; its listing says it supports 23 languages. Its transliteration layout turns English letters into Tamil, and its Tamil 99 and InScript layouts match the computer standards, so you can use the layout you already know.

Best for: privacy-minded Android users and Tamil99 typists.

Pros

  • Five Tamil layouts: Tamil 99, InScript, Phonetic, Compact and Transliteration.
  • Open source (Apache 2.0) and declares on Google Play that it collects and shares no data.
  • Still maintained: updated 3 October 2026.

Cons

  • Android only.
  • No Tamil voice or handwriting input listed.

Keyman

By SIL GlobalGoogle PlayApp Storekeyman.com/tamil

Keyman puts the Tamil layouts used on computers onto your phone. It is the only app here that lists the Tamil typewriter and Bamini layouts. We cover the desktop version in our Tamil typing software comparison.

Best for: typewriter and Bamini typists, and anyone who wants the same layout on phone and computer.

Pros

  • Tamil99, Anjal, Bamini and typewriter layouts on both Android and iPhone.
  • Free and open source, updated in October 2026 on both platforms.

Cons

  • Two steps: install Keyman, then add a Tamil keyboard inside it.
  • On iPhone it needs Full Access once to install a keyboard; its listing says you can switch it off afterwards.

Swarachakra Tamil

By the Swarachakra Team, IDC, IIT BombayGoogle Play

Touch a consonant and a wheel of its vowel forms (கா, கி, கீ) pops up; slide to the one you want. The listing suggests a quick test: if your phone shows its sample Tamil sentence correctly, Swarachakra should work.

Best for: learners and anyone who finds QWERTY-based Tamil awkward.

Pros

  • Laid out like the Tamil script itself: consonants in a grid, vowel forms on a wheel.
  • Declares that it collects and shares no data.

Cons

  • Not updated since 1 February 2016.
  • Android only.

Azhagi Indic Keyboard

By azhagi.comGoogle Play

The Android companion to Azhagi’s desktop software. Its listing highlights fast Tamil transliteration in which you do not need the Shift key to type ள், ற், ண்.

Best for: people who already use Azhagi on a computer.

Pros

  • Tamil transliteration and speech to text, from the makers of the desktop Azhagi.
  • Declares that it collects and shares no data.

Cons

  • Last updated on 9 July 2018.
  • Android only.

What a Keyboard App Can See

A keyboard handles everything you type, including passwords and messages, so choose it as carefully as a banking app. On Android, the phone shows a warning when you turn on any downloaded keyboard. On iPhone, third-party keyboards run in a sandbox. Apple’s developer documentation says that without Allow Full Access, keystrokes go only to the app you are typing in. With it switched on, the keyboard can send keystrokes to its developer’s servers for processing.

  • Prefer the keyboard already on your phone unless you need something it lacks.
  • Read the store’s data label. On Google Play it is under Data safety; remember that developers write these labels themselves.
  • On iPhone, leave Full Access off unless a feature you need requires it.
  • Remove keyboards you no longer use.

Avoid APK Mirror Sites

Many “Tamil keyboard download” results are APK mirror sites. A keyboard APK modified by a third party could record what you type, and you cannot easily tell. Every app on this page is available on Google Play or the App Store, so there is no reason to sideload one. If an app is no longer on the store, choose another.

How We Compared

We read each app’s official Google Play or App Store listing, and the developer’s own documentation where it exists, on 2 November 2026. Platforms, prices, ads, update dates and data labels are copied from those pages, and the sources are listed below. We did not repeat hands-on tests of every app on that date, so we describe features as the developers do and say so. We give no scores or star ratings. Layouts and menus change with updates; if you see something different, tell us.

Questions People Ask

Which Tamil keyboard app is best for Android?

Start with Gboard, which many Android phones already use: add Tamil and type in English letters or Tamil script. On a Samsung Galaxy, try Samsung Keyboard first. Choose Indic Keyboard if you want an open-source app that declares no data collection, SwiftKey or Indic Keyboard for Tamil99, and Keyman for the typewriter or Bamini layout. Setup steps are in our Android Tamil keyboard guide.

Do I need to download a Tamil keyboard on iPhone?

No. iPhone and iPad include Tamil keyboards: transliteration, Anjal, Tamil99 and an alphabetic layout. Add one in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Our iPhone Tamil keyboard guide walks through it. Start with those built-in options before installing another keyboard for an occasional Tamil message.

Is the Desh Tamil Keyboard free?

It is free to download. Its Google Play listing says the Android app contains ads and offers in-app purchases. The iPhone version is listed as free on the App Store. Check the listing for your device before installing because pricing and purchase options can change. Free download does not mean that every feature is free or that the app has no advertising.

Is it safe to download a Tamil keyboard APK?

Use the official store or a download explicitly supplied by the developer, and verify the publisher. Keyboard apps handle sensitive input, so a familiar name on an APK mirror is not enough to establish trust. Check permissions and current privacy disclosures before enabling an app. Prefer the official links in this comparison when deciding which Tamil keyboard to try.

Which Tamil keyboard app works without collecting data?

On Android, Indic Keyboard, Swarachakra Tamil and Azhagi Indic Keyboard all declare on Google Play that they collect and share no data. These are the developers’ own declarations. On iPhone, Apple’s built-in Tamil keyboard needs no Full Access. Recheck the current listing and permissions rather than treating a privacy label as a permanent guarantee.

Is there a Tamil typing tool I can use without installing a keyboard?

Yes. Type in English letters on our Tamil typing page and copy the Tamil into any app. You can also add it to your home screen so it opens like an app and works offline. It does not replace your phone keyboard, though.

Which app should an experienced Bamini typist shortlist?

Shortlist a keyboard that explicitly lists Bamini, such as the relevant Keyman package, rather than choosing by the word Tamil alone. Keyman offers several Tamil layouts; inspect the package description and try a short sample. For a browser trial before installing, use our Bamini keyboard. Confirm whether the receiving document needs Unicode output or legacy Bamini encoding.

Does a keyboard app’s no-data-collected label guarantee complete privacy?

No. Store privacy labels are declarations from the developer, so read them alongside the permissions and the developer’s documentation. Recheck the current listing before installing because an app can change. For confidential workplace material, follow your organisation’s software rules. A keyboard’s layout, convenience and privacy are separate criteria; none of them can be inferred simply from the word Tamil in its name.

Should I choose the same Tamil keyboard app for an elderly parent and myself?

Choose according to how each person enters words, rather than installing one app by default. Let your parent test a short message with the available script and English-letter layouts, and practise switching back to English. Start with the built-in or already installed keyboard using our Android or iPhone instructions. Change apps only if a specific missing feature matters.

Is a five-star rating enough to choose a Tamil keyboard app?

No. Check whether the app supports your device, your preferred Tamil layout and the output you need. Read recent reviews for your particular problem, then verify features against the developer’s current listing. A good transliteration app may still be the wrong choice for a trained Tamil99 or Bamini typist. Test a short message and mixed English text before depending on it for daily work.
