Prepare Vanavil Text for Your Template
- Paste Unicode Tamil in the input box. Start with a short paragraph so you can check the destination before converting a longer text.
- Leave From set to Unicode and To set to Vanavil. The output contains the codes used by the Avvaiyar font, including Windows-1252 symbols.
- Copy the output and paste it into your destination document. Apply your licensed Vanavil Avvaiyar font to the Tamil text.
- Keep the Unicode original. If you download a .txt, this converter writes single-byte legacy text for the destination that expects it.
A font change alone does not encode Unicode as Vanavil. Convert the text first, then apply the matching font. Do not use this output as the only copy of an archive, message or article: retain the Unicode source and create the legacy version only for the document that requires it.
Vanavil vs Bamini: Check the Source Font
Both encodings use ordinary Latin positions for some Tamil glyphs. That overlap makes a short snippet a poor guide to its source. A correct-looking first word does not prove that the rest of a document uses the same mapping. Check the font name in the original document whenever it is available.
For example, Vanavil stores ழ as H, while Bamini uses o. Vanavil stores ஜ as #, ஹ as A and ஸ்ரீ as $. In Bamini those positions have different meanings. Vanavil also uses b for the short left vowel sign and n for the long one. Never substitute the Bamini table just because the text contains familiar keys.
The original font name is stronger evidence than automatic detection. Use the font converter to try another source if needed. Detection is a suggestion; shared codes can be ambiguous. Compare the result against the original, especially words containing the letters above.
Older Office Documents and Mixed Text
A Tamil Nadu IT Department letter dated 11 July 2017 records continued use of proprietary Vaanavil-Avvaiyar in government departments and directs conversion to Unicode. That explains why older office material may need conversion even when the page still looks readable in its original font.
A pasted paragraph loses its font boundaries. If English was typed in another font, the plain characters alone cannot tell the converter which words to leave unchanged. Use the Word conversion path for a mixed document when possible. It lets you choose the source fonts, and leaves unselected fonts alone. This page does not read the older binary .doc format.
Inspect the converted document before replacing anything. Check headings, tables, personal names and punctuation as well as the running text. A readable result can still contain a wrong vowel or a letter from another encoding. If only one section is wrong, check whether that section used a different source font.
How We Verified This Mapping
Our table comes from Tamil Virtual Academy's Vanavil.xml. We rendered all 369 source entries in the actual Avvaiyar font beside Unicode text in Noto Sans Tamil, and inspected the font's character map. All Tamil entries matched. The commercial font is used for verification only and is not supplied by this website.
The table includes two representations of some high-byte characters. This converter accepts both raw byte-style characters and their Windows-1252 equivalents, such as ‡ for ங. It writes the Windows-1252 form. Conflicting quote-normalization rules in the original table are omitted so punctuation stays intact. The full verification record documents the checks; automated checks cover all 247 Tamil letters, Grantha forms, a paragraph and Word conversion.
Questions People Ask
How do I convert Unicode Tamil to Vanavil Avvaiyar?
Paste Unicode Tamil with From set to Unicode and To set to Vanavil. Copy the legacy output into your destination and apply the matching Vanavil Avvaiyar font. Check the rendered words against the Unicode original, and keep that original so future editing does not depend on a legacy font.
Why does the Vanavil output contain English-looking characters?
The output displays the raw legacy sequence, whose Tamil shapes appear only when a matching Vanavil font draws it. That is expected for this conversion direction. Paste it into a document using your permitted Vanavil Avvaiyar copy and compare the appearance before deciding whether the conversion worked for your font.
Does this website supply the Vanavil Avvaiyar font?
No, this tool supplies the verified conversion mapping rather than a Vanavil font download. Use a copy you have permission to use in the destination workflow. If you only need new Unicode Tamil text with a different appearance, choose an openly licensed family from our font catalogue instead.
Can this page convert a complete Unicode DOCX into Vanavil?
No, whole-file Word conversion is available in the legacy-to-Unicode direction only. For Vanavil output, convert pasted text and place it into your document yourself. Keep the Unicode DOCX as your master copy, because the text conversion does not transfer its formatting, tables or page layout into a new legacy file.
Will English names stay readable when I apply the Vanavil font?
Not necessarily, because Latin letters can occupy Tamil glyph positions in the legacy mapping. The tool warns about conflicting characters, but a plain-text string cannot preserve separate fonts for English names. In the destination document, keep those names in an English font and compare the complete passage before printing.
What does a no-glyph warning mean for Vanavil output?
It means the mapping cannot represent that character in Vanavil, so the converter leaves it as Unicode and reports it. Review every warning before saving a legacy text file. Use a separate suitable font in your document or agree another representation with the recipient rather than assuming it will print correctly.
Can I use Bamini output with a Vanavil font instead?
Do not substitute one mapping for the other: shared character positions do not make the encodings identical. Select Vanavil as the destination on this page when the recipient needs Avvaiyar. For incoming Vanavil documents, use Vanavil to Unicode rather than trying to repair a mismatched Bamini result afterward.
How do I download the Vanavil character sequence?
Use the text download action with To set to Vanavil, opening More if the action is hidden on your narrow screen. The file is named tamil-vanavil.txt and uses legacy bytes. It is not a formatted Word file, so select the matching font when placing the text in your layout.
Can I check the Vanavil result before sending it to a printer?
Yes, compare it in the printer’s actual destination font and use Swap for a reverse-conversion check against your Unicode original. Keep that original separately before swapping. These checks address different issues: mapping correctness alone does not establish that the printer’s font file or final layout matches your expectations.
Should I replace my Unicode archive with the converted Vanavil file?
Keep both, with Unicode as the editable master and Vanavil labelled for the specific legacy destination. The converted file serves a particular font-dependent workflow, so it should not be your only copy. When the recipient no longer requires Vanavil, use the Unicode original instead of converting the legacy version repeatedly.
