On Our Server, Two Steps
Meta's M2M100 model reads the Tamil and writes English, then AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2, trained on Indian languages, writes the Gujarati. The English step can flatten the gender and politeness Gujarati needs, so check names and verb endings. Nothing is stored.

Gujarati at a Glance for Tamil Speakers
Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language, close to Rajasthani in Glottolog's classification, while Tamil is Dravidian. Like Tamil, it puts the verb at the end and adds case markers after the noun, so a Tamil sentence keeps its word order in Gujarati: நான் கடைக்குப் போகிறேன் is હું દુકાને જાઉં છું.
Gujarati has three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter, and adjectives change to match: મોટો ભાઈ (elder brother), મોટી બહેન (elder sister). Past tense verbs agree with gender too, so a man says ગયો and a woman says ગઈ for "went". In the present tense, હું જાઉં છું works for anyone, which makes it the safest form to learn first.
Mistakes to Watch For
Gujarati કાલ (kaal) points both ways in time: plain કાલે can mean tomorrow or yesterday, as Hindi कल does. The clear forms are આવતીકાલે (tomorrow) and ગઈકાલે (yesterday). When you translate Tamil நாளை or நேற்று, use the long form so the reader is never left guessing.
Engines tend to drop the gender of the speaker, defaulting to masculine. If you are a woman, check past tense endings: ગયો becomes ગઈ, and ભૂલી ગયો becomes ભૂલી ગઈ. Kinship words lose detail in the other direction: Tamil அண்ணன் and தம்பி both become ભાઈ, with મોટો or નાનો added for age.
One small Gujarati word doubles up: મીઠું means both salt and sweet. In a restaurant, context makes it clear, but a word-for-word tool may not.
Reading and Typing the Gujarati Script
The Gujarati script is a close cousin of Devanagari, written without the line along the top of each word. If you can read Hindi, most Gujarati letters will look familiar, with a few distinct shapes such as ત, ળ and ઝ.
Like Tamil, Gujarati is typed in sound order: consonant first, then the vowel sign, even when the sign appears before the letter, as in કિ. Microsoft lists a Gujarati keyboard layout for Windows in its keyboard layout reference, built on the same INSCRIPT pattern as the Tamil layout.
Gujarati Speakers, Including in Tamil Nadu
In the 2011 Census of India, 5,54,92,554 people returned Gujarati as their mother tongue, 4.58 per cent of the population, most of them in Gujarat. Tamil had 6,90,26,881.
The census groups Saurashtra, the language of the Sourashtra community who settled in Madurai and other Tamil Nadu towns centuries ago, under Gujarati, with 2,47,702 speakers. Gujarati and related mother tongues together make up 0.38 per cent of Tamil Nadu's population.

Questions People Ask
How do you say vanakkam in Gujarati?
નમસ્તે (namaste) for a formal greeting. Among friends, કેમ છો? (kem chho?), "how are you?", often does the job of hello. Choose the complete Gujarati greeting entry and keep its Roman guide beside the script while practising. For a longer introduction, translate your full Tamil sentence separately rather than treating a greeting as a substitute for the rest.
How do I say thank you in Gujarati?
આભાર (aabhaar) is the everyday word. ધન્યવાદ (dhanyavaad) is also understood and is common in writing. Copy the Gujarati expression from its phrasebook entry and use the Roman line as a reading aid. If you add a person’s name or an explanation of what you are grateful for, check that whole sentence separately.
What is the reply to "kem chho"?
હું મજામાં છું (hun majaamaan chhun), "I am in good spirits". It is the standard answer and has no gender. Keep the full reply together while practising rather than translating its individual words back into Tamil. The phrasebook lets you compare the question and response, which is more useful than memorising an isolated sound.
Can I use this for a Tamil message to a Gujarati-speaking family?
Yes. Enter your complete Tamil message and choose an available translation engine for Gujarati, or use a listed phrasebook expression if it fits exactly. Check personal names and how you address each recipient before sending it. The tool has no family or community setting that can infer an individual reader’s preferred wording.
Does Gujarati use the Devanagari script?
No, it has its own script, closely related to Devanagari but written without the top line. The letters and vowel signs follow the same logic, so Hindi readers pick it up quickly. Use actual Gujarati text if you need to check or edit a result. Changing a Hindi font will not convert the sentence to Gujarati, and a shared-looking letter does not guarantee the same word or meaning.
How do I say "I do not understand" in Gujarati?
મને સમજાયું નહીં (mane samjaayun naheen). Like Tamil எனக்குப் புரியவில்லை , it uses "to me" (મને) rather than "I". Use the full expression when you need to ask someone to explain again. Read the source phrase shown with a match before copying, especially if your original Tamil request adds a particular subject you do not understand.
Can I read the Gujarati translation in English letters?
The Gujarati phrasebook includes Roman spellings for its listed expressions. Choose the complete Tamil phrase that fits, then read its Gujarati line and guide together. The tool does not add that guide to every new server translation, so a custom paragraph may appear in Gujarati script without a Roman version beside it.
How do I type Gujarati to edit a translation from Tamil?
Use a Gujarati keyboard on your device or paste an existing Gujarati spelling when correcting the result elsewhere. This page’s input is for Tamil, and its script-conversion button converts Roman Tamil into Tamil script. It does not turn English-letter Gujarati into Gujarati, so keep the two typing tasks separate.
Why does Gujarati output look different from Hindi output?
Gujarati uses its own Unicode script rather than Devanagari, so a Gujarati translation should not be checked only by comparing letter shapes with Hindi. Copy the full Gujarati words without replacing similar-looking letters. If you intended Hindi as the target, use the Tamil to Hindi tool instead of changing fonts.
Should I trust Gujarati business names in a translated Tamil invoice?
Check business names, addresses, amounts and dates against the original before sharing the translation. A Tamil-to-Gujarati sentence translation can help you understand a note, but it does not confirm a company’s registered spelling. Keep an approved Gujarati name unchanged when you have one, and translate the surrounding explanation separately if necessary.
